Walter Sisulu University (WSU), the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality and the Alfred Nzo District Municipality have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will pave the way for the construction of a new Walter Sisulu University campus in the Mpondoland region.
The signing ceremony was held at the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality Council Chambers and was attended by representatives from various government departments, municipal leaders and other key stakeholders. The Walter Sisulu University delegation was led by the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandi Mgwebi, accompanied by members of the university’s executive management.
The construction of the new campus is expected to create employment opportunities, stimulate the local economy, open business opportunities for local entrepreneurs and improve access to higher education for students from Mpondoland and surrounding communities.
The Municipal Manager of the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality, Mr Luvuyo Mahlaka, welcomed the initiative, describing it as the fulfilment of the municipality’s long-standing vision to bring higher education institutions closer to local communities.
Alfred Nzo District Municipal Manager, Mr Zamile Sikhundla, said the district continues to face high levels of unemployment due to its predominantly rural nature. He noted that the construction of the university campus would create jobs, attract investment and unlock broader development opportunities that would benefit communities across the district.
In her closing remarks, Walter Sisulu University Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandi Mgwebi, called for strong collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the project. She said the campus would become a lasting legacy that would benefit both present and future generations.
