Three suspected extortionists have been shot dead following a shootout with members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Nothintsila Locality, Ngqeleni.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:15 on Monday, 2 November 2026, when TRT members from Mthatha received information about three men allegedly collecting protection money from local businesses.
While travelling along the Nothintsila gravel road, officers spotted three men matching the suspects’ descriptions and approached them.
Police said the suspects opened fire on the officers, who retaliated, fatally wounding all three men. No police officers were injured.
Three pistols with filed-off serial numbers were recovered at the scene.
The identities of the deceased suspects have not yet been established. Cases of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition have been opened.
