The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has issued an urgent safety recall affecting hundreds of Nissan, Toyota and Lexus vehicles over defects that could increase the risk of serious accidents.
In a media statement released on Tuesday, the NCC announced the recall of 314 Nissan Qashqai SUVs, 507 Toyota Land Cruiser 300s and 124 Lexus LX600 vehicles sold through authorised dealerships across South Africa.
According to the commission, the Nissan Qashqai models are being recalled due to a defect involving the fuel pipe. The fuel pipe may move within its retaining clip while the engine is running, causing it to wear over time. This could eventually lead to a fuel leak, posing a potential fire hazard.
The affected Nissan vehicles were sold between 4 May 2021 and 17 September 2024. Nissan has introduced a permanent repair to replace the temporary fix implemented during an earlier recall campaign.
The Toyota Land Cruiser 300 and Lexus LX600 recalls stem from a manufacturing defect involving the V35A engine. The NCC said machining debris may have remained inside some engines during production, contaminating critical engine components.
The contamination could lead to bearing failure, causing engine knocking, rough running, difficulty starting or even the engine stalling while the vehicle is in motion.
“The loss of motive power while driving increases the risk of an accident, particularly at higher speeds,” the commission warned.
The affected Toyota Land Cruiser 300 vehicles were sold between 13 December 2022 and 7 May 2024, while the Lexus LX600 models were sold between 15 December 2022 and 7 May 2024. Some Lexus vehicles were also exported to Botswana and Namibia.
The NCC has urged all affected vehicle owners to immediately contact their nearest authorised Nissan or Toyota dealership to arrange a free inspection and repair
