A 30-year-old man, Olwethu Kommani, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for kidnapping, repeatedly raping, robbing and assaulting a young woman in Motherwell, Gqeberha.

Kommani was sentenced in the Motherwell Regional Court on Monday, 2 November 2026, after being convicted on three counts of rape, robbery, two counts of assault and kidnapping.

The incident occurred on 20 June 2021 when two women were walking in NU13, Motherwell. Kommani assaulted and robbed them before kidnapping one of the victims.

He raped her twice in separate fields in Motherwell before taking her to his home in Veeplaas, where he held her captive overnight and raped her for a third time.

The victim escaped the following morning and reported the incident to police.

The court sentenced him to life imprisonment for the rape charges, with additional sentences for robbery, assault and kidnapping ordered to run concurrently.
