Two arrested after police recover 263kg of stolen copper in Komani

Police have seized a vehicle worth R300,000 and recovered 263kg of suspected stolen copper cables and pipes during an intelligence-driven operation in the Eastern Cape.

Two suspects, aged 22 and 44, were arrested on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, after a white Suzuki Ertiga was intercepted on Aerodrome Road in Komani.

Officers discovered 96kg of copper cables and pipes in the vehicle before further investigations led them to a residence in Whittlesea, where another 167kg was recovered.

The recovered copper is valued at approximately R32,875, while the vehicle is believed to have been used in the alleged crimes.

The suspects face charges of possession of suspected stolen property and damage to essential infrastructure. They were expected to appear in the Komani Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 6 November.

District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph condemned infrastructure theft, warning that it damages the economy and disrupts communication services.
