A massive manhunt is underway after 12 people were killed and several others wounded in a deadly mass shooting at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Gauteng, on Tuesday night.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the attack occurred at approximately 23:10 on 9 June 2026, when officers responded to reports of an active shooting in the informal settlement.
Upon arrival, police discovered multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services were immediately dispatched to the scene to provide medical assistance and transport the injured to nearby hospitals.
Preliminary investigations indicate that 12 people lost their lives in the attack. Eight adult men and three adult women were declared dead at the scene, while a fourth male victim later died in hospital. At least nine other people sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to various medical facilities for treatment.
According to police, more than 10 armed suspects allegedly arrived in the area in a white Toyota Quantum. The group was reportedly dropped off near a petrol station in Cleveland before entering the informal settlement through different access points.
Investigators believe the suspects moved through the settlement, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing in the same vehicle.
Provincial and district detectives, supported by crime intelligence operatives and forensic experts, have been deployed to investigate the attack and track down those responsible.
The motive behind the mass shooting remains unknown and is the subject of ongoing investigations. No arrests had been made at the time of publication.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over violent crime in Gauteng, with police under pressure to identify the perpetrators and determine what led to the deadly attack.
Authorities have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward and contact the nearest police station or the Crime Stop hotline.
