The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the suspension of five additional senior officers as investigations into the controversial Medicare24 tender continue to unfold.
In a brief statement, SAPS said the suspensions form part of ongoing internal processes linked to matters arising from the Medicare24 tender.
“Internal departmental processes are underway, and in the interest of preserving the integrity of these processes, the SAPS will not provide further comment at this stage,” the police service said.
The latest suspensions come just weeks after SAPS placed nine police officers on suspension in connection with the same tender process. Those officers served as members of the Bid Evaluation Committee (BEC), which was responsible for assessing bids related to the Medicare24 contract.
At the time, SAPS said the affected members had been suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings and related investigations.
The police service reiterated its commitment to accountability and ethical governance, stressing that the investigations form part of efforts to uphold integrity within the organisation.
“SAPS remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency and ethical conduct in all its operations,” the organisation said.
The Medicare24 tender has come under intense scrutiny following allegations of irregularities surrounding the awarding of the contract. The matter has prompted forensic investigations and disciplinary processes within SAPS, with authorities moving to hold officials accountable where wrongdoing is identified.
