OR Tambo police arrest 72-year-old man in suspected stock theft case

A 72-year-old man is expected to appear before the Bityi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 22 July, after he was arrested for allegedly being in possession of suspected stolen livestock in the OR Tambo District.

The arrest was made on Tuesday during a follow-up operation conducted by members of the Mthatha Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit at Tyelebana locality, Xhongorha Administrative Area, under the Bityi policing precinct.

Police said the suspect was found in possession of 16 sheep and two lambs with an estimated value of approximately R25,000.

According to police, the identification marks on the sheep had been tampered with, and the suspect was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the ownership of the livestock.

The man was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen stock.

He is expected to make his first court appearance in the Bityi Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, said the fight against stock theft remains a top priority for police in the district.

“Fight against stock theft in the district remains one of our priorities as it robs many families of their hard-earned wealth, leaving victims languishing in poverty,” said Modishana.
