A joint operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Brand Protectors has dealt a significant blow to the illegal counterfeit goods trade in the Western Cape, with counterfeit merchandise valued at approximately R98 million confiscated during a raid in Bellville CBD.
The search-and-seizure operation was conducted on Tuesday, 09 June 2026, targeting shops suspected of trading in counterfeit and illicit goods. Law enforcement officials carried out inspections at several businesses in the area as part of ongoing efforts to curb the sale and distribution of fake branded products.
During the operation, authorities seized a large quantity of counterfeit merchandise, including branded clothing, running shoes, and sneakers. The estimated street value of the confiscated goods is R98 million.
According to SAPS, the operation forms part of a broader strategy aimed at combating the counterfeit goods market, which negatively impacts legitimate businesses, consumers, and the economy.
Police said investigations into the matter are ongoing, with authorities working to identify and hold accountable those involved in the illicit trade. Some individuals linked to the targeted businesses are currently being questioned as investigators gather further evidence.
The successful seizure is being hailed as a major victory in the fight against counterfeit goods in the province. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to intensifying enforcement operations against illegal traders and protecting consumers from fraudulent products.
SAPS urged members of the public to remain vigilant when purchasing branded goods and to report suspected counterfeit trading activities to law enforcement agencies.
The circumstances surrounding the case remain under investigation.
