A joint operation by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and the South African Police Service (SAPS) has led to the arrest of 121 suspects during a large-scale illegal mining crackdown in Mohlakeng on the West Rand.
The intelligence-driven operation, conducted on 10 July 2026 at Bhundu Inn, involved the SANDF’s Solomon Mahlangu Regiment Alpha, Bravo and Charlie Companies, SAPS Counter Intelligence, Defence Intelligence and Battlefield Surveillance.
Authorities seized a range of equipment allegedly used in illegal mining, including generators, jackhammers, water pumps, explosives, firearm magazines, ammunition, cash, cellular phones, alcohol and two vehicles.
The 121 suspects were arrested for illegal mining, possession of gold-bearing material and contravention of the Immigration Act. They include 18 Lesotho nationals, 37 Zimbabweans, 28 Mozambicans, 33 Malawians and seven South African citizens.
The SANDF said it remains committed to supporting SAPS in the fight against illegal mining and organised crime, adding that the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to restore law and order in affected communities.
