The Aliwal North Regional Court has handed a life sentence to 35-year-old Ntsikelelo Toto Mlambomni for the rape and murder of his 45-year-old girlfriend in James Calata, Eastern Cape.
The sentence brings to an end a five-year legal process following the brutal attack that claimed the woman’s life on 1 May 2021.
Police were called to a homestead in Newsite, James Calata, where they discovered the victim’s body lying outside the property. She had sustained injuries to her upper body and showed signs of strangulation. A subsequent post-mortem examination confirmed that she had also been sexually assaulted.
James Calata Detectives launched an intensive investigation and, with the assistance of community members, arrested Mlambomni later that same day. Their investigation ultimately led to his conviction on 13 July 2026.
The court sentenced Mlambomni to 15 years’ direct imprisonment for rape and life imprisonment for murder.
Joe Gqabi District Commissioner Major General Lindelwa Vellem welcomed the outcome, describing it as a victory for justice and a strong message against gender-based violence.
“The successful conviction and sentencing of the accused demonstrate our unwavering commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of gender-based violence are held accountable,” Vellem said.
