Traditional healer accused of masterminding deadly love-triangle killings finally arrested

A popular traditional healer from KwaMashu has been arrested six years after police uncovered an alleged murder plot driven by jealousy that claimed the lives of an ANC Youth League member and two eThekwini Metro Police officers.

The arrest, carried out by the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team on Friday, marks a major breakthrough in a case that investigators say began with a mistaken identity before escalating into a calculated double assassination.

According to police, the suspect allegedly believed Metro Police officer Lindokuhle Madonsela was involved in a romantic relationship with his wife and hired hitmen to kill him.

However, the plan allegedly went tragically wrong on 26 May 2020 when ANC Youth League member Thamsanqa Kingdom Gcabashe was gunned down outside his home in Section G, Mpumalanga Township. Investigators later established that the attackers had mistaken Gcabashe for Madonsela.

Police say the suspects allegedly regrouped after realising their mistake and, two weeks later, ambushed Metro Police officers Lindokuhle Madonsela and Ndumiso Thusi as they reported for duty on 9 June 2020. Both officers were shot dead at the scene.

The KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team said ballistic evidence linked both crime scenes, allowing investigators to connect the murders and identify those allegedly involved in the plot.

Five suspects had already been arrested and charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder. They include Fana Shabalala, Zamokuhle Nyandu, Mthokozisi Ntando Blose, ANC branch committee member Holy Shozi and Sandile Msezane.

Police allege the group was recruited and paid to carry out the killings.

The arrest of the alleged mastermind brings the total number of accused in the case to six. He is expected to appear in the Hammarsdale Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 July 2026.
