The South African Police Service (SAPS) is investigating approximately 14 cases linked to the 2026 Local Government Elections, including ballot paper theft, intimidation and clashes between political party supporters.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola confirmed the cases at the IEC Results Operations Centre in Midrand on Wednesday, saying police were also investigating murders reported in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
He identified parts of eThekwini and uMkhanyakude in KwaZulu-Natal, as well as areas in the Eastern and Western Cape, as election hotspots.
In the Eastern Cape, police intervened in a protest over water-related grievances in the Amathole District Municipality to allow voting to continue.
Masemola said elections had generally proceeded peacefully and urged police officers to remain politically impartial while on duty.
