The counting, tallying and verification of votes continued overnight across South Africa following Wednesday’s 2026 Local Government Elections, with party agents and accredited observers monitoring the process to ensure transparency and accountability.
According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), only 35.5% of the expected results slips had been scanned into the results system by 09:00 on Thursday, 5 November.
The IEC reported that 23,444 of the 66,073 expected results slips nationwide had been scanned, while 22,983 (34.8%) had been captured into the system.
A total of 16,791 results slips, representing 25.4%, had also undergone independent auditing.
Meanwhile, 18 local municipalities, accounting for 7% of municipalities, had completed the results process.
The IEC has urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to remain patient as the counting and verification processes continue.
The Commission also cautioned against circulating unverified information, calling on all stakeholders to allow the electoral processes to conclude.
Voters and political parties can follow verified election results through the IEC’s official results portal at https://results.elections.org.za/ or via the IEC mobile application.
