AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has refused to cast his vote in the 2026 Local Government Elections, citing a lack of genuine commitment from political parties to the economic emancipation of ordinary South Africans.
The king’s decision was confirmed on Wednesday, 4 November, by the royal house’s ambassador, Dr Matthew Mpahlwa.
Dalindyebo reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with political party manifestos, arguing that they were filled with promises but lacked meaningful commitments to improving people’s economic circumstances.
His decision comes as millions of South Africans head to voting stations across the country to elect their municipal representatives.
The king had previously called on voters to boycott the elections, questioning whether political parties had done enough to address the challenges facing communities.
The royal house’s position was reportedly not directed at any particular political party but reflected broader concerns about the country’s political leadership and the failure to deliver meaningful economic transformation.
