Alfred Nzo Municipality Turns to “War Rooms” to Tackle Service Backlogs

The Alfred Nzo District Municipality is reviving a hands-on approach to governance by reactivating its district-wide “war rooms,” positioning them as central hubs for fixing persistent service delivery problems.

Announced on 22 April under the leadership of Executive Mayor Tsileng Sobuthongo, the initiative is designed to bring multiple government players into one coordinated space where issues can be identified and resolved more quickly.

Rather than operating in silos, the war rooms aim to integrate efforts across departments and spheres of government. Priority will be given to critical services such as water and sanitation, road infrastructure, housing, electricity, drainage systems, waste collection, and environmental management.

Sobuthongo has stressed that the revived platforms will focus on practical outcomes, not just discussions. By inviting MECs and national ministers into the process, the municipality hopes to tighten accountability and accelerate decision-making where delays have previously stalled progress.

Preparations are currently underway for the official rollout, which is expected to bring together local municipalities, government departments, state-owned entities, and key stakeholders. The move signals a shift toward more coordinated, action-driven governance in the district.
