Vanderbijlpark crash: Dludla applies for bail after 14 schoolchildren die

Scholar transport driver Ayanda Dludla is set to appear in the Vanderbijlpark
Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday as he makes another bid for bail after a crash that
killed 14 schoolchildren.
The 22-year-old is facing several charges, including murder, attempted murder, and
reckless driving, after the minibus he was driving was involved in a head-on collision
with a truck earlier this year.
The incident happened in January near Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng while the minibus
was transporting learners to school.
It is alleged that the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle before moving into the
lane of an oncoming truck.
Fourteen children lost their lives at the scene, while others were injured and taken to
hospital.
“At first, the charges were considered culpable homicide. However, after the National
Prosecuting Authority (NPA) reviewed the docket and examined the evidence, it
determined that there was prima facie evidence to pursue murder charges against the
accused,” said spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana at the time.
The State is expected to oppose bail, citing the seriousness of the charges and the
circumstances of the crash.
Dludla has been in custody since his arrest and is now seeking bail as he awaits trial.
