SAWS warns of windy, cooler and unsettled weather across parts of South Africa

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that a cut-off low pressure system is expected to bring windy, cooler and unsettled weather conditions to several parts of the country from Tuesday afternoon through to Saturday.

According to SAWS, the weather system, which is associated with a surface high-pressure system, is expected to move eastwards over the coming days, affecting multiple provinces.

The weather service said the system will initially impact parts of the western interior before spreading to the Free State and the western half of the Eastern Cape.

“As the system moves eastwards, it is expected to spread these conditions to the Free State and the western half of the Eastern Cape. By Friday and Saturday, it may begin to affect the North West, Gauteng and neighbouring provinces,” SAWS said in a statement.

Residents in affected areas can expect strong winds, cooler temperatures and generally unsettled weather conditions as the system moves across the country.

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution on the roads, as strong winds may create hazardous driving conditions, particularly for high-sided vehicles and motorists travelling on exposed routes.

“Take extra care on the roads – strong winds may cause dangerous driving conditions,” the weather service warned.

SAWS also cautioned that strong to fresh winds over the western interior could increase the risk of veld fires, especially in dry areas where vegetation remains susceptible to ignition.

The weather service said it will continue to closely monitor the developing weather system and provide updates and warnings where necessary.

Members of the public are encouraged to stay informed by following official weather updates and to take the necessary precautions to ensure their safety during the period of adverse weather.
