Ramaphosa refuses to resign over Phala Phala judgment

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he will not resign following last week’s Constitutional Court judgment on the Section 89 impeachment process linked to the 2020 theft at his Phala Phala farm.

Addressing the nation from the Union Buildings on Monday evening, Ramaphosa said the court ruling does not compel him to step down and that resigning would undermine constitutional processes and efforts to rebuild state institutions.

“I, therefore, respectfully want to make it clear that I will not resign,” the President said.

The Constitutional Court ruled that aspects of the National Assembly’s impeachment rules are inconsistent with the Constitution and ordered that the independent panel’s report on the Phala Phala matter be referred to Parliament’s Impeachment Committee.

Ramaphosa said he respects the judgment but will seek a judicial review of the panel’s report, which he described as flawed.

The President maintained that he has not committed any wrongdoing and stressed that the Constitutional Court made no findings on his alleged conduct.

He also vowed to continue efforts to rebuild the economy, strengthen institutions and fight corruption.
