Suspended KZN prison boss expected to appear in court on fraud and money laundering charges

Suspended KwaZulu-Natal Correctional Services Commissioner Mnikelwa Nxele is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate court following his arrest on charges of fraud and money laundering linked to an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption within the Department of Correctional Services.

Nxele was arrested as part of a broader probe by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) into alleged procurement irregularities and financial misconduct within the department. The charges against him reportedly span nearly two decades, from 2004 to 2023.

His arrest comes more than a year after he was suspended in May 2025 over corruption allegations. At the time, Nxele denied any wrongdoing and claimed his suspension was linked to his efforts to expose allegedly inflated prison food supply contracts and other procurement irregularities within Correctional Services.

The SIU investigation has focused on allegations of fraud, money laundering, and the possible misuse of public funds through irregular procurement processes. Authorities are examining transactions and contracts that may have unlawfully benefited individuals over several years.
