A suspected hijacker was shot dead and another arrested following a dramatic shootout with a security officer in Klaarwater on Wednesday.
According to reports, a Tracker Connect officer was patrolling the area when he drove into a crime scene where a gang had allegedly hijacked a Toyota Quantum at gunpoint.
The suspects reportedly opened fire on the officer’s vehicle. The officer returned fire in self-defence, striking one of the alleged hijackers, who later died at the scene.
The remaining suspects fled, triggering a manhunt involving multiple law enforcement and private security agencies.
A second suspect was subsequently tracked down and arrested, while police recovered two firearms believed to have been used during the incident.
Members of the Chatsworth SAPS Tracing Team, Mariannhill SAPS, Durban Metro Police K9 Unit, Tracker Connect, Fatima Protection Services, Blue Security and PT Alarms assisted in the operation.
The security officer escaped the attack unharmed.
Police investigations are continuing as authorities search for the remaining suspects linked to the hijacking.
