Deadly Manenberg shooting leaves one dead and several injured

Western Cape police have launched a manhunt for a group of gunmen following a shooting incident in Manenberg on Wednesday evening, 17 June 2026, that claimed the life of a young man and left several others injured, including a police officer.

According to police, a 22-year-old man was shot and killed during the attack. Four men aged 24, 35, 36 and 48, as well as a 56-year-old woman, sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

The incident unfolded in Rio Grande Walk, where a silver-grey vehicle reportedly stopped before several occupants exited and opened fire on people gathered outside a residence.

Police officers who were patrolling the area responded after hearing gunshots. Upon arriving at the scene, they allegedly came under fire from the suspects, who fired several shots at the responding officers.

During the exchange, a 42-year-old SAPS officer sustained a head injury caused by shrapnel. The officer received medical treatment and is among those injured in the incident.

The suspects fled the scene before they could be apprehended and remain at large.

Manenberg police have opened a murder case and six counts of attempted murder for investigation. Preliminary investigations suggest that the shooting may be gang-related.

“No arrests have been made at this stage, and investigations are ongoing,” police said.

In response to the violence, additional operational forces have been deployed to the area to stabilise the situation and increase police visibility within the affected community.

Police are appealing to anyone with information that could assist investigators in identifying or locating the suspects to come forward.
