The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has announced a series of organisational changes aimed at strengthening the party’s structures and preparing for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The decisions were taken during a meeting of the ANC Eastern Cape Provincial Task Team (PTT) held on 1 June 2026, where party leaders reflected on the political landscape and outlined strategies to bolster the organisation ahead of the municipal polls.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the PTT said the meeting took place at a critical time for both the ANC and the country, particularly as the South African Communist Party (SACP) prepares to contest elections independently for the first time in the democratic era.
The task team reaffirmed its commitment to defending what it described as the democratic gains achieved over the past three decades, including policies such as Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), the National Health Insurance (NHI), and the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Act.
As part of its restructuring efforts, the PTT resolved to establish a 15-member Provincial Working Committee (PWC) that will coordinate the implementation of decisions and strengthen organisational coherence across the province.
The party also announced the formation of several sub-committees focusing on key areas including political education, campaigns, communications, elections, finance, health, economic transformation, policy and research, gender issues, disciplinary matters and deployment.
In a bid to strengthen its presence on the ground, Provincial Executive Committee members will be deployed across all eight regions of the Eastern Cape to improve coordination, organisational performance and responsiveness to community concerns.
The PTT also reviewed progress on the ANC’s candidate selection process for metropolitan and strategic municipalities. According to the statement, candidates will be selected based on criteria including gender representation, generational balance, qualifications, experience, knowledge of local government and alignment with ANC policies.
The party said the measures are intended to ensure that capable and ethical leaders are deployed to drive service delivery and developmental transformation at local government level.
Concluding the meeting, the ANC Eastern Cape PTT expressed confidence in its ability to secure electoral success in the upcoming local government elections and called on members and supporters to actively participate in forthcoming by-elections in the WB Rubusana Region.
The task team further reaffirmed the ANC’s support for international solidarity causes, including the people of Palestine, Cuba and Venezuela, while pledging to continue working towards a united, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous South Africa.
