Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has approved new Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) control measures aimed at helping livestock farmers recover from outbreaks while protecting South Africa’s agricultural sector.
The new framework introduces risk-based trade rules, allowing certain livestock activities to resume during quarantine periods and offering alternatives to the mass culling of herds.
“South Africa’s livestock producers need clear rules, sound science and practical pathways that allow them to manage outbreaks without unnecessarily jeopardising their livelihoods,” said Steenhuisen.
He added that the measures are designed to protect animal health while minimising economic disruption for farmers.
The new regulations will take effect once published in the Government Gazette.
