Cyril Ramaphosa says government is working closely with communities to respond to severe weather conditions that have claimed at least 10 lives across several provinces.
Government has declared a national state of disaster following heavy rainfall, flooding, thunderstorms, damaging winds and snowfall that caused widespread damage and displacement.
“The President’s thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues of the people who have died,” the Presidency said in a statement.
Ramaphosa assured South Africans that authorities at all levels will continue supporting affected communities.
“National, provincial and municipal authorities will work with communities to address the effects of the disaster,” the statement added.
The President also praised rescue teams and organisations assisting affected residents, while warning that severe weather may continue as winter intensifies.
“We are making the best use of science to pre-empt some of these events and to respond to the aftermath,” Ramaphosa said.
