The Gauteng High Court has ruled in favour of Julius Malema in his defamation case against media personality Ngizwe Mchunu, finding that remarks made by Mchunu were unlawful and harmful to Malema’s reputation.
In its judgment, the court ordered Mchunu to refrain from making any further defamatory statements about the Economic Freedom Fighters leader and also directed him to pay punitive legal costs.
The case stemmed from several public allegations made by Mchunu during media interviews, where he accused Malema of receiving financial backing from Nigerian drug dealers and protecting undocumented immigrants.
The court found that the claims were defamatory and lacked lawful justification, concluding that the statements caused reputational harm to Malema.
The ruling is being viewed as a significant legal victory for Malema and a strong warning against making unsubstantiated public accusations without evidence.
Legal analysts say the judgment reinforces the principle that freedom of expression does not extend to damaging allegations made without factual support.
