The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has committed R60 million towards strategic electricity infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving supply reliability, supporting economic growth and attracting investment.
The funding includes R35 million to replace the Chelsea–Summerstrand 132kV power line and R25 million to strengthen the electricity network within the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ), creating capacity for future industrial expansion.
Mayor Babalwa Lobishe said the investment is about more than building new infrastructure.
“A reliable electricity network is the foundation of a competitive and growing city. These investments are not only about constructing new infrastructure – they are about modernising our electricity network, maintaining critical assets and creating the conditions for investment, business expansion and sustainable economic growth.”
The municipality has also allocated an additional R13 million for minor grid extensions, unplanned maintenance and the replacement of critical electrical equipment.
“By strengthening strategic infrastructure today, we are improving service reliability for our residents while positioning Nelson Mandela Bay as a destination of choice for investment, industry and tourism,” Lobishe said.
