Notorious Jeffreys Bay gang leader Michael Smith has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of murder, attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, malicious damage to property and assault.
Smith was sentenced in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 29 July 2026. Police said he led a gang responsible for terrorising the community through robberies and housebreakings.
Investigators made a breakthrough after a community awareness campaign encouraged residents to come forward with information. Smith later fled Jeffreys Bay but was tracked down and arrested by the Tactical Response Team.
Sarah Baartman District Commissioner Major General Thandiswa Kupiso praised the investigators and the community for helping bring Smith to justice, saying the sentence sends a strong message that gang violence will not be tolerated.
