IEC urges South Africans to register during final voter registration weekend

The Electoral Commission (IEC) has urged eligible South Africans to register to vote or update their registration details during the final voter registration weekend on 1 and 2 August, ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

A total of 23,699 voting stations will be open nationwide from 8am to 5pm on both days, with 48,212 electoral officials deployed to assist voters.

IEC Chief Executive Officer Sy Mamabolo said the weekend is the final opportunity for eligible citizens to register, verify their address details or update their information before the voters’ roll closes.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Velenkosini Hlabisa also called on citizens to participate, saying strong municipalities depend on electing capable councillors.

The Department of Home Affairs will align its operating hours with the registration weekend to assist people who need identity documents.

The IEC said the voters’ roll will close at midnight on the day the 2026 Local Government Elections are officially proclaimed, after which no new registrations or changes will be allowed until after the elections
