Government has thanked South Africans who participated in the 2026 Local Government Elections while expressing condolences to families who lost loved ones during the electioneering period.
Deputy Government Spokesperson William Baloyi said government appreciated the millions of registered voters who turned out to exercise their democratic right.
“While we celebrate the participation of millions of South Africans in this important democratic process, government conveys its deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones during the electioneering period,” Baloyi said.
The statement comes after National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola confirmed that police were dealing with serious crimes, including murders reported in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.
Government also commended the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for overseeing the elections and law enforcement agencies for maintaining peace and public order.
Employers who released workers to vote, as well as individuals and organisations that assisted voters waiting in queues, were also thanked.
Baloyi said these acts of kindness reflected the spirit of Ubuntu, urging South Africans to continue promoting unity and social cohesion.
He added that democracy did not end at the ballot box, but required continued public participation and accountability to ensure municipalities fulfilled their responsibilities.
