Four men have died following a devastating fire that swept through the Kathrada Park informal settlement in Claremont, Johannesburg, during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
According to the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS), the fire, which involved multiple shacks, was reported in the early hours of the morning. EMS crews responded rapidly to the scene and worked to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.
Despite their efforts, four adult males were found dead after the fire was extinguished.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.
EMS has extended its condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the deceased.
Authorities have also reminded residents to exercise extreme caution when using heating devices, particularly during colder weather conditions. Residents are urged never to leave heaters, paraffin stoves, candles, or other heating equipment unattended, as these can significantly increase the risk of fires.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
