Julius Malema has filed an urgent contempt of court application against Ngizwe Mchunu, seeking a six-month prison sentence for alleged contempt of court.
The application, filed on 8 June 2026, is set to be heard on 17 June 2026. Malema alleges that Mchunu has continued to make defamatory statements about him despite an existing court order prohibiting such conduct.
In court papers, Malema is seeking an order declaring Mchunu in contempt of court and imposing a six-month term of imprisonment. The application further requests that a warrant of arrest be issued and that Mchunu be directed to surrender himself at the nearest police station within 12 hours should the court grant the relief sought.
Mchunu has been cited as the first respondent in the matter. The court has directed him to notify Malema’s attorneys if he intends to oppose the application and to file the necessary responding papers within the prescribed timeframes.
The case is expected to test whether Mchunu’s alleged conduct constitutes a deliberate violation of a court order, a key requirement for a finding of contempt of court.
The matter will be heard on 17 June 2026.
