Nqatha welcomes Port St Johns taxi elections as deadline to restore stability looms

Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha has welcomed a decision by the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the province to proceed with leadership elections in Port St Johns, describing it as a crucial step towards restoring stability in the local taxi industry.

The announcement follows a meeting between Nqatha and taxi operators on Monday, amid ongoing tensions marked by violence, intimidation and allegations of extortion within the sector.

During the engagement, the MEC issued a stern warning to operators, urging them to resolve internal disputes, end all acts of violence and commit in writing to agreements aimed at stabilising the industry.

Nqatha warned that failure to comply would leave him with no choice but to close the Port St Johns taxi rank by 15 June in the interest of public safety.

Following the meeting, SANTACO informed the MEC that leadership elections will be held on 11 June 2026 and requested support from the Department of Transport to facilitate the process.

“We view this decision as a positive and encouraging step in the right direction. The commitment to hold elections demonstrates a willingness by operators to resolve their differences through lawful and democratic processes,” said Nqatha.

“Stable and legitimate leadership is critical in restoring order, protecting livelihoods, and ensuring that commuters receive safe and reliable transport services.”

Nqatha said the department remains committed to supporting lawful interventions aimed at restoring peace and stability, while maintaining a zero-tolerance approach to violence, criminality and any conduct that threatens the safety of commuters and operators.
