The Eastern Cape Department of Transport says it is keeping a close watch on worsening weather conditions across parts of the province, which have already resulted in several flood-related road closures, particularly in low-lying farming areas.
Authorities have confirmed that a number of low-level bridges, especially around Joubertina and nearby towns, have been affected by rising water levels, making them unsafe for motorists.
In the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, the N2 towards John Tallant is currently inaccessible due to flooding. Traffic officers have been deployed to affected routes and are actively managing the movement of vehicles. Motorists are being urged to follow all instructions issued by law enforcement officials to ensure their safety.
While snowfall has been reported in high-lying areas, including Lootsberg Pass near Middelburg, Wapadsberg in Nxuba, and areas surrounding Robert Sobukwe and Lady Grey, transport authorities have confirmed that all major mountain passes remain open. At this stage, there have been no road closures linked to snow.
Despite this, the Department has issued a strong warning to motorists not to attempt crossing flooded roads or low-lying bridges. Officials say fast-flowing water remains extremely dangerous and can easily sweep vehicles away.
The Department added that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as conditions evolve.
Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed, and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas as the adverse weather persists.
