The Busisiwe Mkhwebane Foundation has called on SAPS to urgently investigate alleged irregularities in a recent immigration verification operation conducted in Durban on or about 21–22 May 2026.
The operation reportedly involved the eThekwini Municipality, the Department of Home Affairs, and other agencies, targeting foreign nationals around the Diakonia Centre.
Public claims attributed to Mayor Cyril Xaba state that between 300 and 457 people were processed within a short period, with only a few found undocumented. The Foundation says this raises serious doubts about the legality and accuracy of the operation.
It argues that proper immigration verification involves detailed checks, including biometric capture, database verification, and document authentication, making the reported timeframe questionable.
The Foundation has urged SAPS to investigate the planning of the operation, methods used, officials involved, and to preserve all related evidence, including records, footage, and communications.
