Killers of police officer and state witness sentenced to lengthy jail terms

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has welcomed the lengthy prison sentences handed down to three men convicted for the brutal murders of an off-duty police officer and a state witness in the Western Cape.

The Western Cape High Court in Cape Town sentenced 40-year-old Luzuko Yalezo to an effective 28 years behind bars after he was convicted on multiple charges, including two counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Although the court imposed a total sentence of 111 years, some of the sentences will run concurrently.

His co-accused, Mzukisi Ntetha, 34, and Athenkosi Kolanisi, 32, were also sentenced to lengthy direct imprisonment terms for murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

The convictions relate to the 2021 murder of off-duty Wynberg police officer Sakhumzi Mbucela, who was hijacked and stabbed to death in Gugulethu while sitting inside his bakkie. The accused later stole valuables from the vehicle before abandoning it.

The court also heard how the accused later targeted Sibongiseni Yanta, who had allegedly become a state witness in the case. Yanta was kidnapped and murdered after the group suspected he had provided information to police.

The NPA praised Senior State Advocate Meagen September-Qatana and Hawks investigating officer Warrant Officer Hlatshanene for their extensive work in securing convictions and ensuring justice for the victims and their families.

Acting Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Adrian Mopp said the sentences send a strong message against violent crime and attacks on members of the justice system.
