Two 17-year-old boys have been arrested in Qumbu in connection with an attempted spaza shop robbery during which a female shopkeeper was allegedly shot.
The incident happened in Bhalasi on Sunday, 16 August. Police said the suspects allegedly opened fire, hitting the shopkeeper in the upper body.
A man inside the shop reportedly returned fire, allegedly hitting one of the suspects, who was later found with a gunshot wound to his right arm.
Qumbu police arrested the pair in Bajodini on Thursday and recovered an unlicensed 9mm pistol with two rounds of ammunition.
The teenagers were handed over to the Qumbu Youth Centre, with their parents informed. They face charges including attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
OR Tambo District Commissioner Major General Norman Modishana expressed concern over the involvement of young people in crime.
“It is such an unfortunate situation that our youth who are supposed to be at school shaping their future are found allegedly involved in criminal activities,” said Modishana.
