The Congress of the People (COPE) has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to immediately dismiss suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, saying the latest testimony before the Madlanga Commission has destroyed any confidence in his ability to remain in office.
COPE Acting National Chairperson Pakes Dikgetsi said the President “can no longer hide behind suspension” and must “act decisively and dismiss Senzo Mchunu without further delay.”
His remarks follow testimony by Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) prosecutor Drushantha Ramsamy, who alleged that Mchunu interfered in criminal investigations, including arranging travel for a key Crime Intelligence witness and holding undisclosed meetings with former IDAC head Andrea Johnson. Mchunu has denied the allegations.
“When viewed alongside the unilateral disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team, these allegations paint a deeply disturbing picture of political interference in institutions meant to uphold justice,” Dikgetsi said.
COPE also criticised Mchunu’s continued suspension, saying: “The continued suspension of Mr Mchunu at taxpayers’ expense is neither accountability nor leadership.”
The party has urged President Ramaphosa to dismiss Mchunu and ensure all evidence emerging from the Madlanga Commission is referred to law enforcement authorities for investigation.
