Mamelodi Sundowns produced a dominant display to end AmaZulu’s unbeaten run with a convincing 5-2 victory at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Brazilians gradually took control of the contest and broke the deadlock after the 20-minute mark. Brayan Leon opened the scoring with a superb finish from outside the box, giving Sundowns a deserved lead.
Just 12 minutes later, Sundowns doubled their advantage. Teboho Mokoena, returning from injury, made an immediate impact by curling a brilliant free-kick into the top corner from around 20 yards.
AmaZulu came out with renewed purpose after the break and pulled a goal back through Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya, who continued his impressive start to the campaign.
But Sundowns quickly restored their two-goal cushion. Tashreeq Matthews pounced in the 51st minute after AmaZulu goalkeeper Kouassi failed to hold onto a low cross.
Leon then completed his brace in the 66th minute, putting Sundowns firmly in control at 4-1.
Ngwenya gave AmaZulu another lifeline when he scored his second of the evening with 20 minutes remaining.
However, Sundowns had the final say as substitute Bennet Mokoena found the back of the net for his first league goal of the campaign, sealing a comprehensive 5-2 win.
The victory sees Sundowns move level on points with Orlando Pirates at the top of the league table, while AmaZulu suffer their first defeat of the campaign.
