SIU recovers about R2 billion for State

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has recovered about R2 billion that is due to be repaid to the State following investigations authorised through Presidential proclamations.

Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi revealed this while appearing virtually before the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Tuesday.

Kubayi said President Cyril Ramaphosa had gazetted 84 proclamations since 1 April 2024, allowing the SIU to investigate alleged irregularities.

She said the SIU uses legal reviews and the “no-loss, no-profit” principle to recover money from beneficiaries of unlawful or irregular decisions.

The Minister also revealed that the SIU had made 1,949 criminal referrals to the National Prosecuting Authority, with about 1,794 cases still pending.

Kubayi praised the SIU for recovering public funds but said government wants to see more successful prosecutions arising from its investigations.
