The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has announced the closure of all schools in the province on 12 May 2026 due to severe weather conditions expected to impact the region.
In an official circular issued to principals, educators and school-based staff, the department said a second frontal system moving across the Western Cape is expected to bring heavy rainfall and possible flooding from the afternoon of 11 May into Tuesday, 12 May 2026.
In consultation with the Provincial Disaster Management Centre and the South African Weather Service, the department confirmed that all public schools will remain closed for the day as a safety precaution.
“All learner transport in the province will also be suspended,” the WCED said, adding that schools must immediately inform parents, caregivers and transport service providers about the closure.
The department said all schools are expected to reopen on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, depending on weather conditions.
Principals have also been instructed to report any storm-related damage through the CEMIS system to allow for swift assessment and support.
Early Childhood Development centres have been advised to follow similar safety measures in the interest of child protection.
The WCED said the decision was taken to prioritise the safety of learners and staff amid worsening weather conditions across the province.
