Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela has placed the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) under administration, citing serious governance instability, audit failures and operational challenges.
Announcing the decision on Monday, Manamela said the move follows prolonged legal and governance concerns, including questions over the NSFAS Board’s legitimacy, multiple resignations, and ongoing management disputes.
He also highlighted a disclaimer audit outcome for the 2024/25 financial year, irregularities flagged by the Auditor-General, data integrity issues, delayed ICT reforms, and backlogs in student appeals and accommodation services.
“These challenges threatened the stability and credibility of NSFAS,” he said.
Government has appointed Dr Hlengani Mathebula as administrator to stabilise the institution, strengthen governance, fix operational systems, and restore accountability.
Despite the intervention, Manamela assured students that funding, allowances and services will continue without interruption, stressing that the goal is to protect and restore the institution rather than disrupt it.
