Tavern owner arrested for allegedly beating man to death over liquor debt

A 30-year-old tavern owner is expected to appear before the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after allegedly assaulting a man to death over an unpaid liquor debt in Sulenkama.

According to police, the incident happened on Monday morning at Lower Ngxaxha locality in Maqhubini Administrative Area. It is alleged that the suspect fetched the 34-year-old victim from his home in Milani locality before assaulting him inside the tavern.

Police say the victim was allegedly knocked against a wall during the assault and later lost consciousness. Officers and emergency personnel were called to the scene, where the man was declared dead.

The suspect was arrested and charged with murder.

Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner Brigadier Vukile Ntuli condemned the incident, saying it was tragic that a person allegedly lost his life over money owed for liquor. Ntuli also conveyed condolences to the victim’s family and urged investigators to ensure that justice is served.
