Motorists in South Africa will soon renew their driving licences less frequently after Cabinet approved extending the validity period for light vehicle and motorcycle licences from five years to 10 years.
The change applies to licence codes A, A1, B and EB, while heavy commercial and public transport vehicle licences will continue to follow the existing renewal periods of between two and five years.
The Department of Transport said the move is aimed at reducing administrative burdens and improving efficiency in the country’s driving licence system.
Earlier this month, Transport Director-General Mathabatha Mokonyama told Parliament that the department had completed its work on extending the validity period, adding that public submissions strongly supported longer licence renewal cycles.
At the time, officials indicated the department was considering an eight-year validity period, while Transport Minister Barbara Creecy had previously confirmed that a cost-benefit analysis was underway. Cabinet has now approved a 10-year validity period for qualifying licences.
