Snow shuts key South Africa–Lesotho border crossing near Matatiele

The Border Management Authority (BMA) has temporarily closed the Qacha’s Nek Port of Entry near Matatiele after heavy snowfall made it unsafe for border operations and travel.

The temporary closure follows consultations between South African and Lesotho authorities, who agreed that worsening weather conditions posed a risk to border officials, travellers and freight transport.

The Qacha’s Nek crossing is a vital route linking the Eastern Cape with Lesotho, and its closure is expected to disrupt cross-border travel until weather conditions improve.

The BMA has advised travellers and freight operators to postpone non-essential journeys or use the Telle Bridge Port of Entry, located about 190 kilometres away, as an alternative route.

Authorities will continue monitoring weather conditions before deciding when it is safe to reopen the border crossing.
