The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has announced it will prosecute individuals linked to the Life Esidimeni tragedy, which claimed the lives of at least 141 mental healthcare patients between 2015 and 2016.
The decision follows years of investigations, with the NPA citing the complexity of the case for delays. The move was endorsed by National Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate A Mothibi.
An inquest led by Judge Teffo found that several deaths resulted from negligence and systemic failures within the Gauteng Department of Health.
The NPA said there is sufficient evidence to pursue charges, including culpable homicide, marking a key step towards justice for the victims’ families.
