The number of confirmed mpox infections in South Africa has increased to 22, following the detection of four additional cases, the Department of Health has confirmed.
The latest cases were identified by 22 September 2026, bringing the country’s confirmed total from 18 to 22.
Among the new cases is a 47-year-old man from Cape Town who recently travelled to Spain. He had initially been listed as a probable case while awaiting test results from Spain. His status was changed to confirmed after the positive laboratory result was received.
Three other cases have also been confirmed, including two imported cases involving citizens of Germany and Norway.
The Western Cape accounts for the majority of infections, with 18 cases, followed by Gauteng with three and KwaZulu-Natal with one.
The department said 21 of the 22 confirmed cases are male.
Authorities have urged people who have had close contact with a confirmed mpox patient within the past 21 days to monitor their health and seek medical attention if symptoms develop.
Mpox may cause fever, headaches, muscle and back pain, fatigue and a characteristic rash or skin lesions. These lesions can occur on different parts of the body, including the face, hands, feet and genital area.
The department said ongoing monitoring and early identification of infections remain important in limiting further transmission.
