MEC Nqatha outraged by fatal shooting of Ward Councillor in Gqeberha

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha, has expressed shock and outrage following the fatal shooting of a ward councillor in Zwide, Gqeberha.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening, 20 June 2026, at the councillor’s office while a meeting attended by approximately 10 people was in progress.

According to police, two armed male suspects entered the office and held those present at gunpoint, demanding that they hand over their cellphones. During the robbery, one of the suspects allegedly opened fire on a 45-year-old man, shooting him multiple times before fleeing the scene with his accomplice.

The victim sustained several gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene.

MEC Nqatha condemned the killing, describing it as a barbaric act that has robbed a community of its leader. He called on law enforcement authorities to intensify their investigation and ensure that those responsible are swiftly arrested and brought to justice.

The MEC also extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and community members affected by the tragedy, wishing them strength and comfort during this difficult period.

Police investigations into the murder are ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this stage. Authorities have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward
