Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has filed a defamation lawsuit against Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema following public allegations about his academic qualifications.
The legal action comes after Malema claimed that Mabuyane fraudulently obtained a master’s degree from the University of Fort Hare. The remarks were made while Malema was addressing EFF supporters outside the magistrate’s court in KuGompo City, shortly after he was granted leave to appeal in a separate legal matter.
Mabuyane has strongly denied the allegations, describing them as false and damaging to his reputation. His legal team has been instructed to proceed with the case, with the premier stating that Malema’s verbal attacks have been “unabated.”
The African National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape has thrown its support behind Mabuyane, condemning Malema’s statements as slanderous and a form of political vilification.
