Kaze clears the air on Ndlovu absence as Chiefs turn focus to Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze has moved to clarify the absence of midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu, dismissing speculation that the player was rested ahead of the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates.

Ndlovu was notably missing from the squad that played to a goalless draw against Polokwane City FC at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, a result that ended Amakhosi’s five-match winning streak.

His absence had sparked widespread speculation that Chiefs were managing his game time to avoid suspension ahead of the derby showdown at FNB Stadium. However, Kaze was quick to shut down those claims.

According to the Chiefs mentor, the decision was purely tactical, with Thabo Cele preferred in midfield due to the specific demands of the match. Cele was handed a rare start, partnering Lebohang Maboe in a setup aimed at controlling possession and dictating tempo.

“We selected a team based on what we felt the game required,” Kaze explained. “It had nothing to do with resting players for the derby.”

Despite enjoying long spells of dominance, Chiefs were left frustrated in front of goal, failing to convert their chances — a concern Kaze admitted must be addressed urgently.

“We created opportunities but lacked the finishing touch. That’s something we need to improve quickly, especially with such an important match coming up,” he said.

The upcoming derby carries significant weight for Amakhosi. Not only are they desperate to end a five-game losing streak against Pirates, but they are also under pressure to maintain their position in the top three as the title race intensifies.

With momentum slightly dented, Chiefs will be hoping for a sharper attacking display when they face their arch-rivals, in what promises to be another fiercely contested chapter of South African football’s biggest fixture.
